Web Nov 13 @Comdex: Cisco: Web is the future of business, governement
Michael Bartlett (WashTech) Convinced that the Web is the future,
CISCO's John Chambers preached before the live (non-Web) audience in Las Vegas:
"The 'Net impact' means I can run Cisco from anywhere in the
world with the right connections. It means more people are working from home, hotel rooms, airplanes and other
locations."
He was assisted in a table-top demo of a lap top runnig 802.11B - which
if you read Java Skyline fairly often, you know is a quite fast wireless network - faster than DSL. Maybe it's
on the upsurge again. A local newspaper here is sponsored by SBC who declares they would like to give me a free
DSL modem if I order by December 31st But after three years of
begging and deploring DSL is still not available here. The quick
availability check through SBC reported the usual:
DSL Internet Availability:
"We're sorry. Our systems indicate that your distance from the central office exceeds our current DSL Internet
standards. For information on future availability, please contact our customer service center at 1-888-884-2DSL
Monday through Friday, 8 am to 6 pm, or Saturday, 8:30 am to 5 pm (PT).
Thank you for your interest in DSL Internet Service. |
Fortunately I use Sprint Broadband which is available here - and is about 3 times faster than DSL anyway. But it makes you
wonder - why doesn't SBC spend less on ads and more on upgrading their copper so that the ads aren't totally useless
and actually mean something?
